  • 1 Arrive Austrian Lakes in Salzkammergut - Mondsee / Wolfgangsee Arrive Salzburg and travel to the Mondsee Irrsee region of Salzkammergut. The hospitality of the mountain hotels and guesthouses is warm and welcoming. Through mountain pastures and alongside glimmering Lakeland shores, the Mondsee and Irsee lakes are the warmest lakes in the region. Relax by the lakeside shore and take in the clear and pure air, or take a refreshing dip in the sparkling waters. Mondsee is a very old monastery site. You may wish to visit the Church in Mondsee where the wedding for the ‘Sound of Music’ was filmed, or spend extra time wandering through the pretty village of St. Gilgen. The Wolfgangsee Lake is dominated by the 1783m Schafberg mountain on its northern shore. Enjoy the 3-4 hour walk from the village of St. Wolfgang to the summit with phenomenal views over mountains and lakes, orride the Schafbergbahn steam train to the top past beautiful scenery and views.
  • 2 Discover the region - walks and hikes around the lakes Free time to take off on your own and explore this area of outstanding natural beauty. Take a ferry ride to St. Wolfgang and walk along the Sattel (saddle) walk to Lake Schwarzensee, there Madame Lore of the lake hut will treat you with local specialities. The trail continues down into the valley by a gorge and around the Burglstein to the lake promenade at Stroble. Indulgein an apple strudel before continuing along the lakeside walking trail back to the peninsula of Abersee. Or enjoy the cycle route along Lake Wolfgangsee that takes you to the Mozart Village of St. Gilgen. Cross the lake and cycle back along the banks of Lake Mondsee (Mood Lake) to lake Attersee.
  • 3 Local attractions and sightseeing – Hallstatt, salt mines Take a day out to do some sightseeing. Hallstatt’s beauty alone is well worth the visit. With pastel-coloured houses casting shimmering reflections onto the glassy waters of the lake, this town is perfection in itself. The village is situated precariously on a narrow stretch of land between mountain and shore and boats chug peacefully across the lake to the village from the train station. Hallstatt is a centre of salt mining – the Hallstatt Period (800 to 400BC) refers to the early Iron Age in Europe. Visit the Salzbergwerk, salt mine centre, that is located high above the village on the top of Salt Mountain. Back to Mondsee via the impressive historic hunting castle of Fuschl, now a luxury hotel, and where the Prince Archbishops spent many seasons in this beautiful lake land region.
  • 4 Local attractions and sightseeing Walk along alpine trails on the flanks of Mount Krippenste in, and discover the mountain with its fascinating ice cave and superb alpine walking trails on the plateau. You can choose from an easy round trip tour of 3 hours, or up to a more demanding 8 hour hike. With the constant backdrop of Mount Dachstein the highest in the region, the wonderful alpine vistas and viewpoints over the lakes far below are exhilarating. Or climb to the Dachstein caves and you’ll find yourself in a strange world of ice and subterranean hollows extending 80km in some places. The two caves, the Dachstein Eishohle and the Mammuthohle, take about 15 minutes to reach by food in different directions from the Schonbergalm cable car.
  • 5 Cycling around the region There are many cycle tracks in the region for all levels of age and ability, from relaxing cycle trails around the lakes to mountain bike trails that take you up and down the mountain routes. A longer (day) cycle trail (45km) takes you to Bad Ischl a wonderful spa town with its Emperor’s Villa and the delectable Zauner pastry shop. It is a gentle undulating route with some moderate climbs and descents. Along the route you will pass little villages with farm houses en route to Lake Traunsee. Enjoy the lovely lakeside city of Gmunden with its water castle. Follow the cycle trail along the lake until Ebensee where you can take the train to Bad Ischl. The whole route is about 45km. Stay overnight in Bad Ischl and visit the City Museum that showcases the history of this pretty town.
  • 6 Cycling around the region Take the bus to Bad Aussee – the largest town in southern Salzkammergut and close to two lakes. The Koppentalweg is a picturesque 10km hiking and cylingtrail that runs west through the lush Traun River valley. It connects via theKoppenbrullerhohlen (caves) and the Ostufer wanderweg running along the Hallstatter. Or cycle through the romantic city of Bad Aussee with its rich history of salt and artistry to the little village of Altausee next to the lake. A gentle downhill cycle brings you to Lake Grundlsee and an incredible panorama across the lake. You can cycle through the Koppen Valley as well in this route which again brings you to the world heritage town of Hallstatt.
  • 7 Spas There are some glorious spas in Austria and you may want to soak those weary bones on your last day after your energetic days of walking and cycling. About 2 hours from Bad Schell is Bad Gerstein, a cliff-hanger of a town in the Hohe Tauern Mountains. The radon-laced waters here are therapeutic and relaxing and you can take them in the grotto-like pools of the Felsentherme, or the deeper pools of the Gasteiner Heilstollen – a medieval gold mine turned health centre. Or take a further trip (about 3 hours) to Rogner BadBlumau waterscapes with its columns, domes and rooftop gardens. Alongside the usualsteam and sauna fun there’s a Dead Sea salt grotto and two curative hot springs.
