Spend this first day wandering through the village and orientating you with the Sami buildings, architecture and the beautiful surroundings of LakeInarjarvi, Finland’s third largest lake. Locate Siida, home to the Sami museum and the North Lapland Nature Centre, with lots of local stores selling original handcrafted Sami gifts and souvenirs. Check into the Nature Centre for helpful information on the forests, nature parks, fells, bogs, mountain bike trails and where to go for the best hunting and fishing.
  • 2 Introduction to Sami culture and Sami way of life Spend a day at Siida, a window on Sami culture and the diverse nature of northern Lapland. Siida means a Lapp village or a reindeer village and the neighbourhood within it. See the indoor summer exhibitions that are complemented by the cozy open-air museum, with lots of seminars to choose from. Step inside an original Sami log building, and a Mirham Hut – a court house that was used up until 1905. The walls of the cabin are filled with engravings. There are examples of Sami lodges, tents and storage buildings, as well as hunting traps, boats and sleds, and a gold prospector’s cabin. Pick up a beautiful Sami handicraft (duodji), postcards and souvenirs at the Siida shop.
  • 3 Activities – reindeer farm, reindeer herding, Sami cooking Enjoy a day of Sami activities. Visit a reindeer farm where you can feed and take pictures of reindeers, learn how to get them to pull the sleigh and go for a short hike. Learn all about reindeer herding, lasoo- throwing, and making handicrafts from shank hide. Get cooking with the Samis, their food is always fresh and local. Ingredients include reindeer, fish, berries, game and wild birds. Try your hand at witch drumming. The Sami witch drum was originally used by medicine men, along with the Sami chant called the joik, to communicate with the ancient spirits. End the day at the ‘Fisherman’s Inn’ at Karigasniemi and dance, sing, and enjoy music with some of the local Sami.
  • 4 Into the wilderness for trekking/riding under the Midnight Sun The Finish Laplanders call it the polar day or night less night.
