  • 1 – 3 Athens, sightseeing and attractions To experience Athens is to fully understand the essence of Greece: ancient monuments surviving in a sea of cement, startling beauty amid day-to-day life, and tradition sitting close by with modern. Get a feel for the city and walk around the ancient Acropolis and the Parthenon and the centre of Athens around the Plaka district with its charming atmosphere of narrow streets, small gift shops, restaurants and cafes. The Acropolis and Filopappou, two craggy hills sitting side by side; the ancient Agora (marketplace); and Kerameikos, the first cemetery, all form the core of ancient and Roman Athens. On day 2, visit the National Archaeological Museum where vast numbers of artifacts illustrate the many centuries of Greek civilisation. Follow in the steps of Socrates and Plato and walk around the ancient Agora, the commercial hub of ancient Athens and that was once lined with statues and expensive shops. Take a walk up Lycabettus Hill, Athens’s highest hill, or jump on the funicular to the summit – on a clear day you can see Aegina Island from the top. Relax in the evening at one of the many Greek restaurants or tavernas and enjoy local dishes such as grilled ocotopus, lamb kleftiko (slow roasted with rosemary), and fresh grilled calamari, all washed down with lots of ouzo. On day 3 walk up to the Theatre of Dionysos, the world’s first theatre on the south slope of the Acropolis and founded by the tyrant Peisistratos who introduced the annual Festival of the Great Dionysia during the 6thcentury BC.Visit the Acropolis Museum (if you haven’t already done so) that was re-opened in 2009 and showcases layers of history, floating above the ruins and with the Acropolis visible above. Dive into Greek folklore at the Greek Folk Art museum that has myriad collection of folk art from the 18th& 19thcenturies. Make your way to the Monastiraki Flea Market at Avissynias Square where there are lots of treasures to find including books, paintings, clothes and jewellery. End the day at the Oraia Penteli restaurant housed in an impressive mansion of the past century and offering traditional Greek dishes cooked only with local fresh ingredients.
  • 4 – 5 Cruise to the island of Santorini, sightseeing & attractions Hop on board for a wonderful Mediterranean cruise to the islands of Santorini and Mykonos. First stop is the island of Santorini with its spectacular multicoloured cliffs that soar over 300m from a deep volcanic crater. You will not be able to take your eyes off the snowdrift of pretty white houses that line the cliff tops and spill down the rocks. Take time to visit the pretty hilltop villages of Oia and Fira that still retain so much local Greek charm, and visit the fascinating Minoan siteof Akrotiri. Visit a local winery for a wine tasting or one of theirunique breweries, and relax and have lunch at the rooftop restaurant of Camille Stafani that serves all the favourite Greek dishes including stuffed vine leaves, mousaka, and saganaki cheese. Santorini has some of the world’s most unusual beaches, with its black volcanic sand and tall overhanging cliffs – a perfect spot to enjoy some swimming in the clear, blue Mediterranean sea. At the end of the day when you are back on board ship, enjoy a wonderful dinner whilst watching the sun set on Santorini – the reflection on the white-washed buildings and the glow of the orange and red in the cliffs is truly spectacular.

Mykonos was the mythic battlefield where Zeus fought the Gigantes, today it is best known for its lively nightlife. Explore the island’s compelling 16tcentury windmills, narrow bouganvillea-lined streets, and plentiful beaches. Just 30 minutes from Mykonos, the ancient island is rich in Greek mythological history, and is often pinpointed as the birthplace of Greek gods Artems and Apollo There are lots of ancient temples and sanctuaries to see, and beautiful beaches to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch there are no inhabitants on the island so don’t forget your water and snack. Summer is the high travel season in the Mediterranean. The weather is hot and sunny, the water is warm, and millions of people flock to the coast to soak up the sun and take a break from routine.. During the spring months, the flowers are blooming and the landscape is verdant, while autumn days are mild and clear before the winter rains.

Those wanting to travel earlier in the season can visit some of the more southern destinations as well as the larger Mediterranean islands. Cyprus and Malta are lovely in April, with warm days and pleasant nights. Late March through April is also an ideal time to visit Morocco, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, and Turkey.
