Ancient Italy & Greece

  • Rome, Naples, Amalfi Coast, Athens, Delphi10 days
About

A ten day tour around two Mediterranean countries that have given the western world fascinating history and magnificent culture – from architecture and art, mythology and religion, to literature and music, archaeology and ruins, legacies and masterpieces. Starting with the artistic grandeur of Rome, taking a day trip to legendary Capri, on to Naples Bay, ancient Pompeii, serene Sorrento, and scenic Positano, and finally Athens with its iconic Acropolis and the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi.

You should experience it because...

Pompeii offers the best look anywhere at what life in Rome must have been like 2,000 years ago. An entire city of well-preserved ruins is yours to explore. It was once a thriving commercial port and was then buried under 30 feet of hot mud and volcanic ash in AD79. Archaeologists have brought the city back to life.

Fascinating history, magnificent culture

Queue with the masses to visit the Sistine Chapel in Rome and the rest of the massive Musei Vaticani.

Celebrate being in Naples with a pizza at one of the many pizzerias – in 16thcentury Naples, a Galette flatbread was referred to as a pizza, and this famous cuisine was born.

Visit the new Acropolis Museum – located just south of the Acropolis itself and discover just how this ancient monument was born and what it means to the city of Athens and its history.

  • Days Details
  • 1 Rome – walking tour of Campo di Fiori Trastevere & Jewish Ghetto Take an ‘off the beaten’ tour through the atmospheric quarters of rastevere and the Jewish Ghetto. Complete with winding narrow streets, medieval architecture, quiet and picturesque alleys, and tiny and cosy restaurants and bars – this is the real Bohemian area of Rome. Cross the two most ancient Roman bridges and the only island on the river the Isola Tiberina, where one of the most renowned hospitals of Rome stands and enter the Jewish Ghetto that is full of history, architecture and tradition. This is one of the most fascinating areas of Rome boasting some beautiful medieval architecture. Finally to Capo di Fiori – once the site of executions, and where the statue of Giordano Bruno, the most famous martyrs of the Inquisition, still dominates. Today, enjoy the sights and sounds of Rome’s most bustling fruit and vegetable markets.
  • 2 Rome – ancient Rome sightseeing - Colosseum, Roman Forum Start your day near Oppian Hill – one of the famous Seven Hills of Rome – and enjoy panoramic views of the Colosseum. Buy a special ‘skip-the-line’ entrance ticket to the Colosseum and explore the first and second tiers of this incredible landmark with a guide. Learn all about the gladiators who competed in the Colosseum’s gory gladiatorial games. See the famous Colosseum underground chambers. Wander around the circumference and learn what it must have been like when the crowds were roaring, and when the gladiator’s fate was decided by an emperor on a whim. Take a tour of the Roman Forum and admire incredible ruins, such as the Temple of Julius Caesar and the House of the Vestal Virgins, before strolling up Palatine Hill to admire the views of the ruins below. End the day at one of the city’s pizzerias, trattorias, restaurants or gelateries that crowd the city centre and offer delicious Italian wine and food.
  • 3 Rome – time for exploring and sightseeing Visit the Pantheon – a building that has been in use for two thousand years and still looks the same today as it did way back then. Take a tour of the Vatican City – you may need a whole day as there is a myriad of Vatican Museums, and a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica is a must. Check out the Cappuchin Crypt – lots of small chapels decorated with the bones of more than 4,000 Cappuchin monks. Eat something typically Roman – try Jewish style Carciofi (artichokes) in the Jewish ghetto or a popular Roman pasta dish – ‘cacio e pepe’, a pasta dish with lots of pecorina cheese and black peppe – at one of the many trattorias. People watch at the Trevi Fountain and watch them as they ‘throw their coins in the fountain’ – enjoy a delicious Italian ‘gelato’ (ice-cream) while you rest here. Take a walk up the Spanish Steps – built in 1725 – that lead up to the French ‘Chiesa della Trinita dei Monti’ church that was consecrated in 1585. See memorable views of the city from here, and some beautiful frescoes inside the church.

Summer is the high travel season in the Mediterranean. The weather is hot and sunny, the water is warm, and millions of people flock to the coast to soak up the sun and take a break from routine.. During the spring months, the flowers are blooming and the landscape is verdant, while autumn days are mild and clear before the winter rains.

Those wanting to travel earlier in the season can visit some of the more southern destinations as well as the larger Mediterranean islands. Cyprus and Malta are lovely in April, with warm days and pleasant nights. Late March through April is also an ideal time to visit Morocco, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, and Turkey.
