About

The 1000km long Kamchatka Peninsula is without doubt one of Russia’s – and possibly the world’s – most beautiful regions. A ‘mini-Alaska’ Kamchatka is more often called, the ‘land of fire and ice’. It boasts more than 200 volcanoes that bubble, spurt and spew, and lush green forests full of herds of reindeer and bears, and flowing clear streams that are filled with salmon. This tour is an adventure traveller’s dream.

You should experience it because...

Where else in the world can you get close to the magnificent brown bear, in its natural habitat, and watch it as it goes about its daily life fishing, feeding and hunting? Based on the shores of Dvuhyurtochnoe Lake and at other locations, you will spend 10 days of adventure heaven getting close to hot springs, geysers, brown bears, reindeer and wildlife galore.

  • Days Details
  • 1 Arrive at Petropavlovsk- Kamchatka airport, transfer to Petropavlovsk and hotel. Time to walk around the town and admire one of the world’s most beautiful-facing bays of Avacha that looks out at two giant volcanoes and a long line of snow-capped mountains. Begin your volcano-centric trip with an excursion to the small Institute of Volcanology science museum. A walk around the centre of the town takes you past a sculpture of Lenin who stares out at the bay from Place Lenina. Wander along the bay’s stony beach and relax with a beer at a beach-side café. Time in the evening to go over the itinerary with your guide.
  • 2 Helicopter excursion to Geyser Valley and Uzon Caldera or boat trip to Avacha Bay or in to the Pacific to watch sea bird colonies. Ride up high in a helicopter and travel to the beautiful Valley of Geysers, one of the largest geyser fields in the world, and one of the world’s last natural wonders – a lunar landscape of spewing volcanic craters and gurgling eruptions. Take a walking excursion around the Valley and have lunch close to a spewing crater. Optional excursion of a boat trip around glorious Avacha Bay to watch the sea bird colonies of Babushkin Kamen Island – you may be lucky and spot a white-shouldered eagle. And see the Three Brothers Rock – based on the ancient story of three brothers who would always go out fishing together, never wanting to be parted from each-other.
  • 3 Transfer to Kozyrevsk village – bath in Malki hot springs – accommodation in Kozyrevsk in wooden houses. A long drive (500km) takes you to the Tolbachik volcano area in central Kamchatka, where the Great Tolbachik fissure eruption took place in 1975-76 and has left impressive after-effects. New volcanic cones with hot summits, huge ash fields, hardened lava flows and ash-burned forests are all visible here. In fact, tops of the new cones are still blazing. Stop for lunch in Milkovo village and bathe in the hot thermal water of springs that flow down into small reservoirs. The therapeutic benefits of these waters are wide ranging. Enjoy a night’s accommodation in Kozyrevsk in small wooden houses, specially equipped with a soothing Russian bath.
  • 4 Helicopter flight to Dvukhyurtochnoye Lake – see volcanoes from up high. Accommodation in wooden houses on the lake shore. See Alney and Chashakondzha volcanoes from the helicopter as you fly over incredible volcanic terrain on the way to Lake Dvukhyurtochnoye. Time to rest by the lake shore and take in a soothing hot spring bath, walk around the lake to clear and fresh mountain streams, and spot your first sighting of brown bears as they catch they prey in the lake.
  • 5 Bear watching and salmon fishing on the lake. Spend an incredible day bear watching and salmon fishing on the shores of Lake Dvukhyurtochnoye. What could be more idyllic than boating on the lake, bathing in the healing hot springs, and enjoying a dinner of freshly caught fish – bliss!
  • 6 Bear watching. Helicopter trip to Kozyrevsk village – volcanoes Time for more bear watching in the morning, and after lunch a helicopter trip to Kozyrevsk and an opportunity to see the beautiful volcanic landscape that has been created by the fissure in the 1970s. On a clear day you can see the highest volcanoes in Kamchatkaand a hike up them and around them will take you through incredible green valleys and past fresh, clear streams. Stay overnight in tents.
  • 7 Volcanoes A day to spend time observing the volcanoes and their different stages of eruption including ‘young’, ‘cone’, ‘fresh’, ‘lava flows’ and ‘stone sculptures’. This land of the volcanoes is awe-inspiring and breathtaking, and the silence alongside them is one that fills the soul and yet generates excitement – it is like nothing else in the world.
  • 8 A hike up the volcano Plosky Tolbachnik An optional hike to the top of the volcano Plosky Tolbachik across slag fields and lava flowers – the day’s hike will probably take around 7-8 hours. It is not a difficult hike and well worth the effort, and, from the top, you will be able to see the spectacular vista of the Kluchevskaya volcanoes – said to be one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Look down the giant crater from the top – its width is 1.8km – and see the inner landscape of the volcano below with a depth of more than 500m. Return to camp and stay overnight in tents.
  • 9 Transfer to North Breakthrough – volcanoes Dead Forest A last day amongst the volcanoes takes you to North Breakthrough. Hike amongst the new Tolbachik cones – mini volcanoes with heights of 100-200m and walk through the cones of South Breakthrough and the Dead Forest. Here, thousands of trees were killed instantly by the volcanic ash cloud in 1975 that generated a temperature of more than 1000ºC. All that remains to be seen now are the tops of the tallest trees. However, from time-to-time you may spot a flower that is preparing a new ground for the future forest. From the slopes of the new volcanic cones there are beautiful views on to the wide expanse of pumice and lava fields below. This is a black and white world that has been created by an angry sky and a furious Earth. On the crater’s summit the colours change suddenly from black, to reds and yellows, depending on the minerals coming out from the centre of the Earth. Overnight in tents.
  • 10 Return to Petropanlovsk. Return to the town of Petropanlovsk-Kamchatsky stopping for lunch on the way in the village of Milkovo. Time to rest and visit the Kamchatka State Unified Museum or the Kamchatka Regional Unified Museum, or simply relax on the shores of stunningly beautiful Avacha Bay.
  • 11 Fish market. Transfer to airport. You can’t leave without visiting the Central Fish Market. The wonderful, sprawling seafood section of Kamchatka’s main market is full of 30cm crab legs, caviar and different species of whole salmon. Although not particularly practical as a souvenir, takingphotograps of this incredible sight will be enough!
