This tour features the best wine, culture and romantic experiences of Portugal

including a private tour of the country’s best cultural highlights. Enjoy a cooking class, a private wine tasting at top wine estates and cellars, meals featuring local food specialities, market visits and much, much more. Romance is in the air throughout this tour!

You should experience it because...

Lisbon is romance itself and just a short train ride away from the stunningly beautiful, hilltop city of Sintra with its fairytale romance filled castles, palaces, manor houses with flowery landscaped gardens, and winding cobblestone streets and alleyways.

Romance, food & wine:

Enjoy a cosy Portuguese café with some of Sintra’s regional pastries – Sintra is known for its delicious ‘queijadas’, sweet cheese tarts and ‘travesseiros’ – puff pastry ‘pillows’ with a sweet almond filling.

See Lisbon at night, all lit up with Sao Jorge Castle glowing in the centre and the Ponte 25 Bridge (Golden Gate Twin) shimmering in the distance.

A romantic evening in Lisbon is best spent enjoying freshly grilled fish, fado music and wonderful panoramic views.

  • 1-3 Lisbon, sightseeing and attractions Lisbon has so much to offer for the romantic couple – rich history, beautiful cityscapes and excellent food and wine. Visit the city’s highlights – monuments of beautiful Moorish architecture, the old Alfama district, the sophisticated Bairro Alto and Lapa districts, and important museums in Belem and elsewhere. Experience the unique shopping including the speciality shops that sell gold, tiles, antiques, linens and rugs, and do some window shopping in elegant Chiado. Catch one of the bright yellow trams that wind their way through curvy tree-lined streets and experience the Gothic cathedrals and the majestic monasteries that are all part of the colourful cityscape. Enjoy a fresh pasty and bica (espresso) on a petite leafy plaza or watch the sunset from the old Moorish castle. Visit Sintra for a day – its heady highlights are just as romantic as Lisbon’s. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride through Pena Park and see Pena Palace at sunset, or take one through the enchanting Vales dos Lagos (Valley of the Lakes) and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, in the green, hilltop forests of Pena Park. The Pena Palace is ‘Disney fairytale’ gone mad, and don’t miss out on touring the inside of the palace which is just as decadent and glittering as the outside! If time, tour the Moorish Castle and the Convent of the Capuchos, just a short walk down the hill. Enjoy regional cheese, homemade sausages and wines in a local wine bar.
  • 3&4 Porto, walking & wine tour and Duoro Valley wine tour Porto is the capital of port wine and is a fascinating mix of Baroque and modern art and architecture. Enjoy a personalised tour of the city’s cultural highlights, and stroll the narrow streets of the Unesco-listed historic centre. Visit one of the top wine cellars in Porto for a chocolate and wine tasting led by a local guide. Take a private excursion to the Douro Valley, Portugal’s best-known wine region, where terraced vineyards tumble down to the banks of the Douro River. There, visit the best local wineries, explore romantic ancient towns along the Douro river, take an exclusive private cruise, and enjoy the beautiful terraced landscapes.
  • 5-8 Madeira, sightseeing and attractions Spend time on beautiful Madeira, a volcanic island off the coast of Africa blessed with year-round balmy weather. Spend three nights at an exclusive seaside resort surrounded by lush gardens. With your own private guide, explore Funchal’s local markets, wineries, gardens and other highlights. One day, enjoy a private four-wheel drive excursion into the heart ofthe island. Explore the dramatic natural landscapes and rugged coastline, and visit picturesque fishing villages and farming hamlets in the mountains. Hike along Madeira’s network of levada (irrigation canal) trails, or swim in natural rock pools on the northern coast. Stroll through the market hall of Funchal and experience the luxuriant variety of exotic fruits and vegetables, stare wide-eyed as you pass by endless colourful displays of papayas, passion fruit, cherries, and tiny ‘Madeira bananas’. Take the high road around the island, a 35-mile long drive along the favulous autoestradas. These highways leap deep ravines, skirt cliffs and run under tumbling waterfalls. The one from Eira do Serrado to Curral das Freiras offers a pure ‘Alice down the rabbit hole’ drive down a steep 500-yard tunnel. Take the 15 minute cable car ride from Almirante Reis in old Funchal to Monte, and then return downhill in the Monte Toboggan – a converted laundry basket on wooden runners over the polished cobbles. Take afternoon tea at Reid’s, and in Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol, on a cliff top, you can savour the Atlantic sunset from the spa.

It’s a slow pace in the long, hot summer days of the Mediterranean sun - relax on a yacht off the Cote d’Azur, go island-hopping in Greece, or take a leisurely drive along the sunny coasts of Spain, Portugal, France & Italy. See ancient Greek ruins in spring, Provencal magic in autumn, year-round art & architecture in Barcelona & Madrid, and fiestas, carnivals & festivals galore in sunny southern Spain. Morocco is best in spring when the country is lush and green, and head for a touch of winter-sun on a city-break to Portugal’s Lisbon, Porto, or the Algarve.
