Explore the far eastern Russian parks of Durminskoye, Sikhote Alyn, and Lazovsky with local scientists and researchers, and go where very few people go in search of these beautiful big cats. Days Details
1 Arrive at Khabarovsk airport – met by zoologist expert and driver for transfer to the Durminskoye Reserve. Khabarovsk is a booming river town 25km from China and gives off an air of a coastal, almost Mediterranean resort with tree-lined streets, squares with fountains, 19thcentury brick buildings and green parks.
2 – 12 Durminskoye Reserve – tiger tracking for the next 11 days You will be tiger tracking in the protected area of the Tiaga forest to the west of the Sikhote-Alyn mountain range in the Khabarovksi Krias. This forested mountainside and coastal ecosystem is home to one of the largest diversity of wildlife in all of Russia. In addition to the big cats there are 2 species of bear – the Asiatic black bear and a rare species of the brown bear – as well as lynx and wolves. Catch sight also of many prey animals including badgers, sables, red foxes, Eurasian otters, Siberian weasels and raccoon dogs. A big cat specialist zoologist expert as well as an English speaking naturalist guide from Russia are on hand at all times to help you spot the big cats and many of the other mammals and abundant bird life. The snow covered forests can seem barren on first sight, however trained guides will look for signs of tracks, scraps and tell tale signs of animal’s activity, and there will be opportunities to set up hides as well as camera traps to wait and see what arrives in the evenings and at night time. This is the best place in the world to see wild Siberian tigers – there are around 5 adult femaies and a resident male here and cubs with every female. The activities are mainly tracking on foot and skiing, and breakfast, lunch and dinner is included.
13 Khabarovsk – day of rest Last chance to spot some of the wildlife in the reserve before being transferred back to the hotel at Khabarovsk. If you have time and energy, visit the Regional History Museum that showcases a few stuffed-animals and a full-on panorama of the snow 1922 civil war battle at Volochaevka.
14 Depart
