The High Tatras are a magical land of snow-capped mountains; sparklingly clear glacial lakes, charming mountain chalets, and green and lush valleys. As you walk through these spectacular landscapes, there are lots of distinctive historical landmarks to see too.

The Carpathian Mountains

The stunning views of the white limestone cliffs of the Belianske Tatras will leave you spellbound.

See unique medieval wall paintings at the catholic Holy Spirit church in Zehra that date from the second half of the 13th century.

You can almost see down to the bottom of the clear Green Lake, named as such because of its striking green colour that reflects the magnificent colours of the surrounding landscapes.

  • 1 Arrive Slovakia, on to Poprad, overnight in Poprad Arrive at Poprad in the heart of the Slovakian High Tatras mountain district and a major transport hub for the region. There is time on day one to enjoy some free time in the town, and to visit the 16thcentury neighbourhood of Spisska Sobota and its popular thermal water park. A sauna, swim, bubble and slide zones are all part of this wonderful water park where the heat and electricity are generated from geothermal and solar sources. Prepare yourself for the exciting walking days to come.
  • 2 Strbske Pleso – Strbske Lake, Popradske Lake, overnight in Poprad Visit the small mountain town of Strbske Pleso and its beautiful glacial mountain lake in the High Tatras. It is an easy 11km walk through beautiful landscapes on an unpaved path. This first hike takes us through undulating pine forests to poradske Lake – a glacial mountain lake set in a beautiful valley with a charming lakeside chalet to rest and enjoy a picnic. The peaceful and spectacular surroundings will inspire youto simply sit and enjoy the moment. Nearby is a small cemetery for victims of accidents in the High Tatras. Hike back to Poprad for overnight stay.
  • 3 Green Lake, valley of Zelene Pleso An easy 17km hike takes you to the impressive Green Lake in the valley of Zelene Pleso. The water is so pure and clear here that you can almost see the bottom of the lake. Some of these lakes contain fish – salmon and trout. Stop at the Chata Pri Zelenom Plese – chalet by the Green Lake – for rest and refreshment. Hike back to Poprad for overnight stay.
  • 4 Levoca, Spis Castle, Spisska Kapitula, village Zehra – Poprad A sightseeing day to the historic town of Levoca, in the Spis region, and a cultural and historic jewel among the Slovak towns with many fascinating architectural monuments linked to the country’s glorious past. See the old rectangular square in the old part of Levoca with its 14thcentury catholic church of St. James and one of the most famous sacral buildings in Slovakia. The most distinctive feature of the church is the gothic wooden (limewood) main altar of St. James, with a height of 18.6m, and the highest of its kind in the world. Visit the Unesco protected Spis Castle – the largest castle compound in Central Europe – with an area of more than 4 hectares. Another must-see is the late-romanesque St. Martin’s Cathedral with its massive form of a three-nave building with two towers dating from 1245. Don’t miss the unique medieval wall paintings from the second half of the 13thcentury at the local catholic Holy Spirit church.
  • 5 Velicka Dolina (Velicka Valley) – Velicke Lake – overnight Poprad Climb aboard the cable car from Stary Smokovec to Hrebienok Hill to the starting point of today’s hike. The views from the cable cars are stunning. A leisurely 14km walk through the beautiful Velicka valley takes us to the impressive Velicke Lake and its glorious mountain hotel of Silesian House – the largest hotel in the alpine region of Slovakia. Hike back to Poprad for an overnight stay.
  • 6 Belianske Tatras – overnight in Poprad Our final day’s hiking takes on an easy 8km walk from the pretty village of Tatranska where we hike up to the white limestone cliffs of the Belianske Tatras. Surrounded by an oasis of green pine and snow-capped mountain peaks you will feel as if you are on top of the world. Relax at the wooden chalet Chata Plesnivecand looks out over the glorious mountain range.
