Things to do

Gallipoli Get a real feel for how the battles unfolded at Anzac Cove a century ago and appreciate the remote beaches, the ridges, valleys, and trenches and tunnels that are hidden in this undulating wild land where so many lost their lives.

Seaside resort of Canakkale Take a ferry from here across the Dardenelles, or journey just a half hour to the remains of the city of Troy. The giant wooden horse from the Hollywood movie is on the promenade at Canakkale.

Istanbul Spend at least four days in this beautiful city and soak up its incredible history. The main sights include Aya Sofya, once a Christian cathedral and then a mosque and now a museum, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Roman Hippodrome, and the Grand Bazaar.

Ephesus/Kusadasi See some of the best and biggest Roman ruins here outside of Italy. Nearby are the remains of the Greek Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the supposed house where Christ’s mother, Mary, lived out her final days.

Hamam (Turkish bath) Enjoy a sauna, body scrub and massage all in one. The men and women are separate and you can decide how many extras you want.

Turkish delight and baklava Taste some original Turkish delight and baklava that has been served at some of the cafes around Istanbul for hundreds of years. They go down a treat with sweet Turkish black tea or Turkish coffee.

Mediterranean beaches South of Kusadasi is some incredible beaches including at Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Kas that have beautiful turquoise water and amazing western sunsets. Turkish cuisine you can’t leave Turkey without trying a tradition alkebab. In Capadoccia they have a pottery kebab where the meat is cooked inside a pottery jar, similar to a Moroccan tajine, but it’s cracked open at the table and poured on the plate.
